Estructura de la Nave Industrial para Diagonal 80

La prioridad a la hora de resolver la estructura del proyecto ha sido la de conseguir una planta totalmente diáfana sin soportes intermedios. Para ello, se dispone la estructura portante en toda la alineación de fachada conformando pórticos de gran rigidez, gracias a su geometría triangulada.

Para salvar la luz existente entre ellos se han empleado vigas Fink, que debido a su disposición geométrica en planta, mediante triangulaciones, conforman dos jácenas Warren en los bordes que confieren a la estructura la rigidez necesaria para contrarrestar las acciones horizontales de viento.

Tipologías estructurales
La estructura vertical consta de dos pórticos de fachada, formados por pilares metálicos que nacen inclinados en cimentación en forma de “V”, ascienden con directriz recta y se juntan nuevamente de forma triangular para sostener la cubierta.

En la dirección transversal de la nave (la de menor longitud), existen dos núcleos rígidos de comunicación que arriostran la estructura frente a las acciones de viento en dicha dirección. En el otro plano no se considera necesario ningún arriostramiento debido a que la disposición geométrica de los pórticos sustentantes confieren gran rigidez a la nave en esa dirección.

Como estructura horizontal se ha elegido una estructura metálica con forjados de chapa colaborante en todas las plantas, a excepción de la cubierta, donde se ha optado por una cubrición de paneles sándwich ligeros in situ a partir de chapas de acero plegado y aislante. El forjado colaborante irá conectado con las correas longitudinales de 6 m de luz, que se apoyan en las vigas principales o vigas Fink, de manera que los perfiles trabajan como vigas mixtas, lo cual repercute en la dimensión de dichos perfiles aligerando considerablemente la estructura. Con la misma finalidad (reducir la sección de acero necesaria) el forjado colaborante también se conecta con las vigas principales.

El forjado colaborante de canto 16 cm. 7.70 cm, de altura de greca y 8.30 cm, de capa de compresión. El espesor de la chapa será de 0,88 mm.
En la cubierta para contrarrestar los efectos debidos al viento se han colocado arriostramientos en cruz de San Andrés formando vigas verticales en algunos de los planos verticales de los núcleos estructurales que contienen las escaleras. El acero estructural usado en toda la obra será del tipo S 275 JR.

Mecanismos y elementos especiales

Como elementos especiales encontramos las vigas Fink, empleadas para cubrir las grandes luces que tenemos entre soportes ya que la propia arquitectura de la nave busca una planta diáfana, por lo que los pilares únicamente aparecen en fachada. El comportamiento estructural de estas vigas se basa en el trabajo conjunto de una viga metálica superior y un tensor inferior, para contrarrestar las deformaciones. El tendón inferior contraresta las cargas de peso propio, que se compensan tensándolo hasta que recupera la flecha alcanzada por las solicitaciones debidas a cargas verticales.

El tensor ha sido roscado mediante manguitos, acortando su longitud, una distancia tal, que ha provocado una contraflecha capaz de contener la deformación propia de la viga. El cordón superior está formado por un perfil metálico HEA y el cordón inferior es un tensor doble de acero B 500 SD.

In this video Bjarke Ingels shares his enlightened view on Hedonistic sustainability, challenging the misconception that one must give up a portion of their comfortable lifestyle in order to live sustainability. Ingels counteracts that delusion with examples that illustrate the possibilities of sustainable buildings and cities increasing life quality. He encourages architects to embrace their expanded roles of becoming “designers of ecosystems” by creating a world where our presence is not seen as detrimental to our environment through the integration of our “consumption patterns and leftovers” into our natural world. Ingels is optimistic as he shares Hollywood’s copy of BIG’s Denmark Pavilion for the Shanghai 2010 Expo in Iron Man 2. Ingels states, “If Hollywood starts ripping off sustainable architecture to portray science fiction it could be a sign we are moving towards Hedonistic sustainability.”

New Headquarters Of J&A Garrigues / EDDEA

Garrigues,the law firm with the most tradition and prestige in Spain, has promoted during2011 the move from it’s old headquarters in Seville to a new more emblematiclocation in the center of the city with the objective of renovating the imageof it’s offices.

Thebuilding, situated in one of the principal accesses of the city, is located onthe Avenida de la Palmera, a main artery designed with the Iberoamerican Expoof 1929 in mind, forming part of a complex of offices designed in the 80′s, andwith approximate surface area of 6,000 sqm., and four stories tall, counts onfour entrances, public areas, interior distribution and an image that were allinadequate for the current needs of the firm, in terms of function anddistribution of space, requiring a reconditioning and addition of the latestbuilding technologies, and an image in accordance with the professional profileof the work space.

In thisfashion EDDEA was tasked with the all inclusive turnkey project at a fixedprice, with a limited time frame (Fast Track), including an audit of thebuilding prior to the rehabilitation, drafting of the project, constructionincluding installations, furnishings and integrated project management, rightup to the final stages, legalization, and post construction maintenance management.

In terms ofthe design decisions, in dealing with an office building with a structure thatwas present both inside and out, the greatest difficulty of the job consistedin the elimination of those elements that impede a clear interpretation of boththe access points, and communication between spaces. In this sense the workencompassing the atrium becomes one of the most important aspects of therehabilitation, giving prominence to the space, the light and unification ofcolors and materials, so that through it’s sense of a scale we can clearlyidentify the companies signature.

Lastly, theprogram was distributed, prioritizing the public use of the access floor,dedicating the greatest part of its space to reception, attention of clients,meeting rooms, and lecture halls. On the rest of the floors we find the workspaces, ordering the closed offices around the perimeter, along the length ofthe facades and leaving the central spaces for open work areas, supportlounges, archives and communications.

Long-established travel guidebook publishers Frommer's has issued dataon what it considers the world's 10 best airport terminals. On the flipside, italso names the 10 worst and, as per US national USA Today, the ratings takeinto account 'cleanliness, services, on-time departures, navigation and theease of getting to and from a city's center'.

On this basis, Saudi Arabia's Hajj Terminal, at King AbdulazizInternational Airport, is judged the cleanest, slickest-running and mostaccessible airport terminal on Earth.

Constructed specifically for use by pilgrims flocking to the country toparticipate in Hajj - the Mecca pilgrimage - it features an iconic tent-shapedroof and can accommodate up to 80,000 passengers at any one time.

At the other end of the scale, Terminal 3 at New York's JFK isconsidered the world's worst and it's one of no less than four US airportsrepresented in the worst airport terminals list. The same airport's Terminal 5does make the top ten, but it's the only US airport facility in this position.

Now over 50 years old, JFK Airport's Terminal 3 is set to be knockeddown in three years time within a programme that's seeing Terminal 4 beingexpanded. Originally constructed for the sole use of Pan American, it presentlysupports Delta Air Lines operations.

In the words of Frommer's, this terminal presents scenes of ‘endlessimmigration lines in a dank basement, an utter lack of food and shoppingoptions, three crowded and confusing entry points, and hallways that could havebeen designed by M.C Escher for vomiting international travellers out onto anunderground sidewalk with no cabs available'.

PANalytical is the market leader in analysis systems for x-ray fluorescence (XRF) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). To further enhance its leading position in x-ray systems and tubes, a new production facility for x-ray tubes has been designed in Eindhoven. The new building must not only be able to realize future growth, but must also further increase operational efficiency.
The building has three floors that are related to the production process; pre-assembly, assembly and final assembly. In total this process covers about 2,000 m2. Stacking activities results in a compact and clear building where the spatial layout is defined by the production process. Adjacent to the production floors resides the research facility (1,330 m2). Here are new products being developed and tested. Thanks to an atrium, the research facility has direct visual contact with production floors, without disrupting the specific room conditions.
In terms of structure and installations the building is modular in design. The high purity system is modular as well, making ‘plug & play’ connections possible. Combined with light separation walls and a complete quick-response sprinkler system, the building is extremely flexible. Functions are fully interchangeable thanks to the uniform structural concept in terms of vibrations and floor load.

The mechanical systems largely determine the energy use for the building. Therefore we explicitly sought to apply energy-efficient solutions. The most notable solution is the heat pump which reuses the heat generated by the process for building heating. This allows most of the building’s annual heat demand to be covered by this process energy, resulting in a significant reduction of natural gas consumption and associated CO2 emissions.
Achieving a ‘stacked’ research facility had the advantage that the site could be relatively small. The use of two submersible pumps instead of the traditional sprinkler tank was even more space saving. Therefore it was not necessary for PANalytical to purchase additional land.
All functions relating to the production process (discovery – development – production – sales) are located around an atrium. The atrium acts as a communication tool and guarantees synergy between departments and, in particular, between people. All supporting activities, such as meetings and relaxation, take place inside the atrium.
The facades of the building are a reference to the refined machines featuring the end product. The orange accents mark important moments in the facade. The exterior of the building creates extra tactility and refinement via the use of different types of profiled cladding.

An influx and increasing birth rate in the community situated to thesouth of Vienna called for the creation of more, particularly state-of-the-artchild care facilities. Therefore a competition tender submission for a newchild care centre was issued in 2008. The existing 19th century ‘Gründerzeit’school was to be extended by eight primary school classes, a after-school careclub and a kindergarten with kitchen.

The association of architects MAGK illiz won the competition and wasawarded the tender. The draft of the project team MAGK illiz breaks up theconstruction into L-shaped bodies which are interlaced in such a manner thatdifferent places and free spaces to play in and for learning are formed in theinterstices.

Good orientation and quick ways for children and adults are provided bya simple routing system between the functional areas of the two-floorensemble. The new main entrance to the school is also the assembly halland connects the existing school building with the new building. The façade isdeveloped as a ‘pixeled’ white envelope. Format and joining patterns of the“window pixels” meet the current utilisation needs whereby the rooms at theback can be interpreted from outside and the recall value of the individualbuilding sections is enhanced. The façade surfaces alternate between smooth andrough plaster which, particularly in grazing light, creates a vivid impression.

Unlike the high-contrast façade, the design of the interior rooms ischaracterised by varying, finely tuned colour and materialcombinations. The differing design of doors, cloakrooms and wall panels inan individual range of colour for each area of activity facilitates finding theway and increases their identification, particularly for the children. Thecloakrooms of the children’s groups are covered in wood and meander like snailsshells into private niches.

“Pixels” protrude into thecorridors and from the façade; they are used by the children as nests to readand to cuddle up in. All activity areas have green and free surfaces. Theplayground used for breaks turns into a climbing and adventure scenery by itsdazzling orange rubber surface, the roof terrace with the smoothly concretedsurface becomes a race course. Crèche and kindergarten form a common one to twofloor patio which forms a settled pacified centre surrounded by play corridors,multi-purpose and action rooms. The colourful door and ventilation elements ofthe room-high glass façade allow a for an event room to emerge which can be usedflexibly. There is a two-floor loggia of a white-coated welded grid andcoloured glass pain curtain to the west of the group rooms on the left, infront of the kindergarten. It complements the monolithic character of thebuilding and is both a sunshade and fall-protection. Depending on the viewingangle, the façade appears anything from transparent to closed, from theinterior, however, it embodies a protective second envelop, allowing thesmallest children a glance into the greenery and conjures colourful spots oflight in the room.

The material and construction concept is characterised by the highstandards imposed on ecological sustainability. To ensure the building periodwas speedy, the new construction was setup in a composite construction methodwith a solid core as storage mass and a prefabricated, high-insulation envelopeof timber frame construction, of solid wood panel structure respectively.

The entire new building complies with passive house standards, the aimof which is greatest ease and comfort for the user at lowest possible operatingcosts.. With an innovative ventilation concept it is possible to achieve aminimisation of costs with regard to the operating times of the mechanicalventilation. For this purpose the classrooms and group rooms are aired bytransverse ventilation via acoustic slot openings across the corridor zoneswithout noise from the corridor being transported into the classrooms. Thisconcept also technically ensures that overheating in summer is preventedtemperatures dropping at night. Thanks to efficient cost control the overallbudget could also be used to redevelop and renovate the existing gym in thescope of this extension. Furthermore, the circulating strip lights could berenewed and provided with circumferential horizontal, partially movable sunprotection louvers.

The childcare centre of MAGK illiz is characterised particularlysensitively by the traditional, small dimension structure of the surroundings.The broken building volume is so interlaced that it by no means competes withthe environment.

Together with the existing classrooms, the new primary school, the crèche and the kindergarten form one of the largest childcare centres in Lower Austria after a mere period of three years needed for planning and building.

El primer bosque vertical

Bosco Verticales de Boeri Studio es un edificio de alta densidad que experimenta con la integración del paisaje con la fachada arquitectónica. Las dos torres se encuentran actualmente en construcción en Milán, lidiando con el concepto de regenerar el paisaje perdido por la ciudad junto con mejorar la habitabilidad de los edificios actuales. Ambas torres, de 80 y 112 metros me altura, tendrán una capacidad de 480 arboles medianos y grandes, 250 pequeños, 16.000 plantas y arbustos; El equivalente a una hectárea de bosque.

Esquema
Las plantas viven en la fachada al igual como lo hacen en un ambiente natural. Las plantas actúan de manera similar a como resultaría una ‘fachada inteligente’, éstas filtran el polvo del aire, absorben el dióxido de carbono y liberan oxigeno hacia el exterior, mientras también otorgan sombra y un microclima que refresca los meses de verano.

Esta ‘recolonización’ urbana con especies biológicas además de generar mayor biodiversidad, crea un ambiente seguro para animales que encuentran en estas especies refugio y alimento. Esto lleva vida a la ciudad, vida típicamente exclusiva de parques y jardines. Además Bosco Verticales contribuiría a la mitigación de gases tóxicos, además de purificar el aire atmosférico.

La selección de plantas y la distribución de las mismas se realizó con extrema minuciosidad, de manera de aprovechar al máximo el sistema de irrigación.
La forma de los edificios fue elegida para ayudar a prevenir la expansión urbana, proporcionando a los residentes un paisaje privado dentro de sus apartamentos y ofreciendo las mismas ventajas de vivir en una ciudad. La propuesta es el equivalente de 50.000 metros cuadrados de bosque y casas de familia en un entorno de expansión.

Nueva Sede de Garrigues en Sevilla / EDDEA

Garrigues, la firma de abogados con más tradición yprestigio en España, ha promovido a lo largo de 2011 el traslado de su antiguasede corporativa en Sevilla, a un nuevo emplazamiento más emblemático dentro dela ciudad con el objeto de ampliar y renovar la imagen de sus instalaciones.

El edificio, situado en uno de los accesos principalesde la ciudad, se encuentra en la avenida de la Palmera, arteria principal de laciudad. Formando parte de un complejo de oficinas diseñado en la década de los80, y con una superficie aproximada de 6.000 m2 de sobre rasante y cuatroplantas altura, contaba con unos accesos, espacios públicos, distribucióninterior e imagen inadecuadas para las necesidades actuales de la firma encuanto a funcionalidad y distribución del espacio, requiriendo de un nuevoacondicionamiento e incorporación de las últimas tecnologías constructivas eimagen acorde al perfil profesionalizado del despacho.

De esta forma surge el encargo a EDDEA del proyecto y obra, con limitación de plazo (Fast Track), incluyendo una auditoría previa del edificio a rehabilitar, redacción de proyecto, construcción, con equipamiento y mobiliario incluido, y dirección integrada de proyecto hasta la total terminación, legalización, puesta en funcionamiento del edificio y posterior gestión del mantenimiento.

En cuanto a las decisiones de diseño, al tratarse de un edificio de oficinas con una estructura muy presente tanto en el interior como en las fachadas exteriores, el mayor esfuerzo de la intervención ha consistido en la eliminación de aquellos elementos que impedían una lectura clara, tanto de los accesos como de las comunicaciones o los espacios. En este sentido, la intervención sobre el atrio de entrada se convierte en una de las operaciones más importantes de la rehabilitación, cediendo todo el protagonismo al espacio, a la luz y a la unificación de colores y materiales, para que a través de su escala se identificara la representatividad de la firma.

Por último, el programa se distribuyó priorizando el uso público de la planta de acceso, dedicando la mayor parte de su espacio a la recepción, atención de clientes, salas de reunión y espacios de actos y presentaciones. En el resto de plantas se concentran los espacios de trabajo, disponiendo los despachos cerrados perimetralmente a lo largo de las fachadas y dejando los espacios centrales para espacios de trabajo abierto, salas de apoyo, archivos y comunicaciones.

¿Un edificio de 30 pisos en 15 días?

China está creciendo a una velocidad realmente impresionante, y en este sentido la construcción es una industria que no descansa. Ya les contamos hace un tiempo cómo China levantará 5 rascacielos al día por los próximos 3 años, esto implica que el proceso constructivo debe ser rápido y tremendamente eficiente.

En este aspecto, la prefabricación puede ser una excelente alternativa para agilizar una construcción, incluso a tiempos límites, como el edificio de 15 pisos que se construyó, también en China, en un tiempo record de 2 días que les enseñamos a finales del 2010.

Hoy, la versión 2012 de este desafío ya está presente: un hotel de 30 pisos realizado en 15 días.

La empresa Broad Group, especialista en aires acondicionados y con una incipiente experiencia en la industria de la construcción, es la que está detrás de ambos proyectos.

Éste nuevo hotel, con 17.000 m2 y cercano al lago Dongting en la provincia de Hunan, al sur-este de China, fue realizado utilizando casi en su totalidad paneles prefabricados. Tomó 46 horas completar la estructura principal del edificio y 90 horas en finalizarlo por completo. Puede resistir hasta una terremoto magnitud 9, según lo testado en la China Academy of Building Research.

Según el video, el edificio es 5 veces más eficiente que un edificio estándar chino, tiene paneles aislantes de 15 cetímentros de espesor, un sistema de recuperación de calor y monitoreo de la calidad del aire.

Hasta el momento Broad Group sólo ha construido una serie de prototipos usando este modelo prefabricado, que se ha denominado BSB. La compañía construyó su propio pabellón en la Expo de Shanghai, el hotel hotel de 15 pisos en 2 días -en el video superior- y este ejemplo de 30 pisos, el más alto que la empresa haya construido hasta ahora.

Claramente el diseño no es el fuerte de la empresa, pero no deja de ser impresionante la velocidad con la que se trabaja, la eficiendia del proceso, la preocupación por hacer énfasis en temas energéticos y la resistencia de la estructura. Quizá pueda ser un punto de partida desde donde sea factible incorporar mejorías en el diseño o la relación con el contexto, o tal vez, la producción rápida y en serioe -característica de China- es incompatible con el diseño personalizado e independiente. ¿Qué opinan ustedes?

Parque de Bomberos en Valls / Santamaría Arquitectes

El nuevo parque de bomberos se sitúa en un solar prácticamente llano en el polígono industrial Palau de Reig, en Valls. Se pretende generar un edificio compacto e introvertido, diseñado como un objeto aislado. Se crea un volumen rectangular, alineado con la calle Fusters. La mitad del volumen está ocupado por las cocheras y servicios asociados, con helipuerto en la cubierta, y en la otra mitad se sitúan las dependencias del parque.

Para que el edificio se entienda como un único volumen, la diferencia de alturas se resuelve con un pliegue de la cubierta unitaria de hormigón. La cubierta se convierte en el elemento más importante en la imagen del edificio. Se desarrolla en dos niveles e incorpora un pliegue de una planta de altura que se convierte en la fachada por la cual se ilumina el gimnasio. Para potenciar la imagen compacta del volumen, la cubierta sobresale creando un voladizo de hormigón en todo el perímetro del edificio.

Los espacios más públicos, sala de control, despacho del jefe del parque y la sala polivalente, se sitúan en la planta baja, próximos al acceso, y se abren a la fachada principal que da ala calle. La sala-comedor y la cocina se sitúan en el extremo del edificio, abiertos a sur, donde se dispone un espacio exterior pavimentado bajo un porche y árboles de hoja caduca. Los vestuarios y los servicios, la parte más privada del parque, se sitúan en la fachada posterior.

Las fachadas, sobretodo la principal, tienen la misión de conseguir la comprensión del edificio como un volumen continuo, a pesar de que los usos que se esconden detrás sean muy diferentes: uso doméstico en las dependencias y uso industrial en las cocheras. Con este fin, se trabaja solamente con dos materiales: chapa metálica ondulada y paneles sándwich de color rojo.

the young state of georgia in the caucasus has gone through considerable development in recent years,
with growing numbers of tourists discovering the country which is rich with history. as a result,
there has been an increasing demand for airlines to fly there. for its geographical advantages and close proximity
to two of the eurasian country's most important UNESCO monuments, its new parliamentary city kutaisi has been
selected as the site for a new airport.

the design for the new transfer terminal and air traffic control tower for kutaisi airport has just been officially revealed
by the president of georgia, mikheil saakashvili. conceived by dutch architecture firm UNstudio, it is set to serve domestic
and global flights for use by international diplomats, national politicians and for tourism. the 4,000 m2 terminal building
will house a number of program spaces including: arrival halls, a check-in area with lounge, café and car rental facilities;
along with three gates for departure with retail, cafés, a CIP lounge area and exterior garden, an arrival area with customs
and offices for the border police and an administration area with staff rooms and press conference facilities.

in georgia, public buildings and private houses employ their entrance lobbies as a means of showcasing their individual identities.
through their design, UNstudio embraces this architectural concept as a means of manifesting the country's young and dynamic democracy,
along with its rapid development as a main crossing point in the region.

kutaisi airport departures area

incorporating both georgia's historic landscape and architecture into its design, the terminal refers to a pavilion,
a gateway in which a clear structural layout creates an enveloping and protective volume structured around a central exterior space
used by departing passengers. the transparent space around this central point is designed to ensure that the flows of passengers
are smooth and that the circulation of departures and arrivals do not coincide. the axes incorporate views from the plaza to the apron
and beyond to the caucasus on the horizon. the overall layout organizes the logistical processes, and provides optimal security
and ensures that the travelling person has sufficient space to circulate comfortable. serving as a lobby to georgia,
the terminal could also operate as an art gallery, displaying works by local artists, further presenting the identity
of contemporary georgian culture.

the new airport aims to integrate both local and international elements of sustainability. an on-site underground source
of natural water provides the basis for the reduction of energy consumption through concrete core activation.
this water will be utilized in the floors of both the terminal and air traffic control tower, maintaining a regulated temperature
in the two volumes. the cantilevered roofs of the terminal building provide sun shading on south and southwest zones.
a hybrid low pressure ventilation system will be incorporated into the terminal's main structure, as well as a grey water
collection system located in the floor beneath. large areas of PV-cells on the roof's surface may also be implemented
to further reduce energy consumption.

airport traffic control tower

the air traffic control tower stands at 55 metres high, 300 m2 and has been designed to compliment the terminal.
the traffic control cabin located on the top level of the structure, forms the focal point, offering a spacious and comfortable
interior ensuring a workspace of optimal concentration. the tower's exterior is clad with a transparent skin that has the potential
to change color whenever there is a fluctuation in traffic. the centre will function as a light beacon to the sky for the airport,
but also from the road to and from kutaisi. 1,500 m2 of supporting office spaces will be housed in a nearby building.

kutaisi airport will be georgia's first to have a strict segregation of waste. the aim is to establish a recycling system
which could be further implemented into new and existing projects in georgia. construction is set to begin in december 2011,
and is scheduled for operation in september 2012.

'the design for the new terminal in kutaisi focuses first and foremost on the experience of the traveller by creating an inviting, safe, transparent and user-friendly airport. the desire to provide for and communicate equally with both international visitors and the local community is paramount. it was particularly exciting for me to be able to design an airport which is not only linked to the new seat of parliament in kutaisi, but which also creates an entrance condition which functions as a port for the international community. the airport presents a symbolic infrastructural gateway to georgia and, from there, to the rest of the world.
the design for the new airport embraces the traveller by embodying the circumstance of the site. moments of both leaving and returning are celebrated by the large span, open spaces and high ceiling of the terminal structure - reflecting the ways in which such gestures were employed in the great railway stations of the past.' - ben van berkel, UNstudio

Calatrava Withdraws from Denver Airport Expansion

It was with much enthusiasm that Denver International Airport officials announced Santiago Calatrava as the architect for the new $650 million expansion that included a hotel, public plaza, and commuter-rail station. However, Calatrava is now withdrawing himself from the project only a year later. Numerous concerns have been cited as the reason for his departure including “financial constraints, unnecessary time delays, and deep divisions” between his design team, DIA, and Parsons International Group as quoted by his wife and business manager Robertina in a letter to DIA manager Kim Day.

As with many public projects, cutbacks made their way into the equation, with the overall budget being reduced $150 million from the original in February. The 500 room signature hotel was reduced by one floor, including the scaling back of numerous design elements. Calatrava’s commuter-rail suspension bridge was also downsized from $60 million to $22 million before finally losing all funding.

Robertina Calatrava also mentions in the letter that “The project still lacks sufficient funding … [and] it continues to set an unrealistic schedule with little or no room to develop and consolidate the design in keeping with the standards and quality of a Calatrava signature design.”

However, the expansion project is still pressing forward on schedule and on budget – albeit significantly reduced. Calatrava and DIA are parting ways amicably (Calatrava’s firm was paid $13 million for their design services), with the remainder of production being handled by architects of record Anderson Mason Dale Architects and Gensler. In a recent statement Calatrava notes that “from the beginning, we have had the project’s best interests at heart, and although we have decided to part ways, I wish DIA all the best with the South Terminal Redevelopment Program and its future success.”

The number of refugees worldwide is expected to grow to over a billion by 2050. The Liina transitional shelter is a temporary building to be used in cold climates during crisis situations anywhere around the world. Designed and built entirely by the students of the Wood Program at Aalto University, Liina is made of mostly Finnish wood and wood-based materials, making it not only an elegant and dignified but also a sustainable solution to this global problem.

As a transitional shelter it is intended to be a secondary response after a crisis. The shelter can be assembled by two adults in six hours with only common tools and a cartoon diagram. It is designed to house a family of five for up to five years during the post-disaster reconstruction phase and then can be upgraded, relocated, resold or recycled. The interior area is 18 sqm, designed to comply with the accepted standard of 3.5 sqm per inhabitant in refugee housing. The interior contains two semi-private sleeping spaces, a galley kitchen and dual purpose eating/living/workspace. A loft over the sleeping areas can be used as additional sleeping area and storage. There is an additional seven square meters of covered exterior space meant to serve multiple functions for the inhabitants during their occupancy period.

The Liina concept is based on a series of prefabricated sandwich panels that can be easily transported and assembled, and can be flatpacked into a small space. Each panel is 600 mm wide (half the dimension of a piece of plywood) to cut down on waste and to be easily carried by one adult. Six panels are joined together with simple, repeated wooden-dowelled joints to form a frame and tightened using nylon straps (‘liina’ in Finnish), like those used for the transportation of cargo. The strap creates air-tight joints without any metal fasteners or the use of electric-powered tools on-site. The frame is then tilted up and stacked one-by-one with the other frames and tied together with 3 straps. Finally, the building is protected from water and UV damage with a tent-like canopy. The modularity of the design makes it possible to add or subtract frames in order to increase or decrease the size of the shelter to accommodate the needs of the inhabitants. The plan of the shelter was designed to provide varying degrees of privacy and spaces for daytime and nighttime activities.

Other parameters for the design were the size and weight of the panels, ease of assembly and reasonably good heat insulation. The result is a low-tech solution of plywood and LVL (laminated veneer lumber) panels with wood-fiber insulation. Following an ideas competition last autumn, thirteen Wood Program students from ten countries developed the shelter by constructing full-size models of the building and carrying out structural tests, such as earthquake and wind-tunnel tests, in conjunction with a team of engineering students.

Liina is designed for the prevailing climate in the Ararat region of Turkey, chosen for its continental climate and history of refugees and displaced people due to disasters such as earthquakes, drought, and political turmoil. However Liina’s design can easily be adapted to a variety of cultural needs and environmental situations. A prototype of the shelter was assembled in Helsinki’s Railway Square during the World Village Festival in May 2011.

Cuando empezamos a pensar la construcción de nuestra nueva sede de una manera sustentable, pensamos en los elementos básicos como la calidad de la luz, el aire interior, agua y confort, para crear un espacio no solo eficiente en consumo de energía, sino un lugar de trabajo saludable para los 90 empleados, proveedores y clientes.

Este proyecto es parte del grupo pionero de construcción en Colombia, registrado con certificación LEED en diseño y construcción sustentable en el país.

El proyecto se inserta en la ciudad de Bogotá, en la calle Cra. 14 No. 98 – 5, edificio AeI construido en un terreno de una urbanización anterior. La oficina ocupa una superficie de 1.000 m2 en los pisos 2 y 3 del edificio, y están diseñadas y construidas por las mismas compañías que realizaron el edificio; diseñado por AeI, y construido por CURE Architects.

La oficina consiste en una recepción, oficinas abiertas, oficinas privadas para los gestores de la empresa, salas de reunión, salas de trabajo, biblioteca y sala de muestras, centro de computación, centro de copiado, baños y una cafetería en terraza.

El nuevo Centro Deportivo para la ciudad de Aberdeen es un centro cívico para la comunidad. El proyecto fue financiado por la Universidad de Aberdeen, la Municipalidad de la ciudad y la agencia SportScotland, trabajando en el proyecto en conjunto con los arquitectos desde el año 2005 al 2007.

El edificio abrió sus puertas en agosto de 2009 y es un centro acreditado para el desarrollo de una amplia variedad de deportes. Contiene una cancha para fútbol en sala, una cancha de usos múltiples, una pista de atletismo cubierta, cuatro canchas de squash, un una sala de máquinas de 100 estaciones, una gradería para 500 espectadores, oficinas, camarines, laboratorios de rendimiento, una cafetería y una cancha de hockey exterior. Con este nivel de equipamiento, el Centro fue pre-seleccionado como base de entrenamiento para los Juegos Olímpicos de 2012.

“El deporte se basa en el compromiso y la disciplina, pero también tiene que ver con la diversión. Todos los deportistas deben tener buena disciplina y capacidad técnica, pero los grandes deportistas también tienen talento y personalidad, algo que los diferencia de los demás”. El edificio en Aberdeen toma este pensamiento como una inspiración; fue rigurosamente planificado, pero también contiene muchos gestos y elementos relacionados con el deporte y el juego.

Por ejemplo, las formaciones de los equipos ganadores en la Copa del Mundo inspiraron la disposición de las ventanas en una de las canchas de fútbol.

Una gran viga estructural de 104 metros de largo, que sostiene el piso de la sala de máquinas y un salón de baile, es un gesto que representa la fuerza muscular, mientras que los delgados elementos estructurales de las paredes representan la elegancia y la finura.

Colores relacionados con la ropa deportiva y los equipos han sido cuidadosamente incorporados en el diseño para “animar” los espacios de circulación y ayudar a la gente a orientarse en todo el edificio.

“En este proyecto hemos tratado de diseñar un edificio que contenga espacios inspiradores para motivar a la comunidad y a las próximas generaciones. Nos alegramos mucho cuando Louise Martin, presidente del SportScotland dijo: ‘Tenemos ahora un lugar de formación excepcional y espero que esto inspire a muchas más personas a mantenerse activos y a potenciar el talento de muchos nuevos deportistas”.

Hoy se anunció el ganador del Premio Pritzker 2011: Eduardo Souto de Moura.

El arquitecto Portugués de 58 años comenzó trabajando junto a Alvaro Siza, quién también fue premiado con el Pritzker, el año 1992. Abrió su propia oficina en 1980, iniciando una destacada trayectoria que cuenta al día de hoy más de 60 proyectos, la mayoría de ellos en Portugal, y también en España, Alemania, Italia, Reino Unido y Suiza.

“Durante las últimas tres décadas, Eduardo Souto de Moura ha producido un trabajo contemporáneo, pero que al mismo tiempo hace eco de las tradiciones arquitectónicas. Sus edificios poseen la habilidad única de transmitir caracteres aparentemente incompatibles – poder y modestia, coraje y sutileza, fuerte carácter público e intimidad – al mismo tiempo.”

Dentro de sus obras más destacadas encontramos el Estadio de Braga (2004), una imponente estructura de hormigón que aprovecha la topografía del sitio delimitar el edificio, cumpliendo con lo que Souto de Moura denomina buena arquitectura: la coexistencia de lo natural con lo hecho por el hombre.

Otra de las obras destacadas por el jurado fue la Torre de Burgos, terminada el año 2007 en Porto, su ciudad natal: Dos edificios, uno vertical y uno horizontal en distintas escalas, capaces de dialogar entre sí y con el paisaje urbano. Para Souto de Moura fue todo un desafío: “Una torre de 20 pisos de oficinas es un projecto inusual para mí. Empecé mi carrera haciendo viviendas unifamiliares”.

Y sin duda vivienda ha sido lo que más ha diseñado durante su carrera, con partidos generales muy potentes. El jurado destacó la Casa Nº2 en Bom Jesus por su “peculiar riqueza a través de las delicadas bandas de hormigón de sus muros exteriores”. Sobre esta, Souto de Moura ha dicho que “al estar el sitio en una pendiente empinada mirando sobre Braga, decidimos no hacer un gran volumen puesto en la cima. A cambio, hicimos una construcción en 5 terrazas con muros de contención, con una función diferente para cada terraza — árboles frutales en el nivel inferior, luego una piscinas, las partes principales de la casa en la siguiente, los dormitorios en la cuarta terraza, y luego en la parte superior plantamos un bosque”.

Entre su obra más reciente encontramos el Museo Casa das Histórias, dedicado a la obra de la pintora portuguesa Paula Rego. “Cuando la pintora me escogió como su arquitecto, tuve la suerte de escoger el sitio. Este estaba rodeado de un bosque con un claro en la mitad. En base a la elevación de los árboles, propuse una serie de volumenes de alturas variables. Desarrollando este juego entre lo artificial y lo natural, me ayudó para definir el color exterior, concreto pigmentado rojo, un color contrapuesto al verde del bosque. Dos grandes pirámides a lo largo del eje de entrada evitaron que el proyecto fuera una neutral suma de cajas”.

Qing Shui Wan es un club de spa con habitaciones de hotel ubicado en el centro de Shenyang. Este edificio tiene tres niveles con un área de esparcimiento de más de 7.000 m2 por piso.

El primer piso consiste únicamente del hall de recepción principal y los baños calientes. El área de los baños calientes está dividida en dos zonas principales para hombres y mujeres.

El segundo piso aloja un restaurant japonés con 184 ubicaciones, un área de buffet, un resturant VIP, una zona de cine, zonas de descanso, áreas de degustación de té, salón de belleza, y salas de masaje.

En el tercer piso se encuentra el spa con 41 salas de masaje, 23 salas de Majong (dominó chino), 14 salas de tratamiento, 2 baños turcos, y 24 habitaciones de hotel. Los diseñadores se encargaron de la arquitectura interior así como del diseño de la fachada.

Este edificio diseñado por la oficina Stanisic Associates, intenta responder de manera sustentable a su entorno. En su lado este se dispuso una galería que funciona como disipadora de calor en verano, induciendo la ventilación cruzada a través de los departamentos sin necesidad de aire acondicionado o ventiladores.

Esta ventilación es inducida a través de la baja temperatura ambiente de la galería, que es 15 grados más fresca que el lado opuesto del edificio. Esta galería también es un espacio social, ya que en ella se dispusieron las circulaciones principales y sus habitantes lo usan actualmente para reuniones.

Los departamentos del nivel superior, que tienen entre dos y tres habitaciones, no tienen acceso directo a la galería. En su lugar, se llega a ellos a través de un pasillo revestido con paneles de mármol café y un techo metálico que refleja la luz. En cada uno de los departamentos se dispusieron rejillas de ventilación de cristal sobre sus puertas de entrada.

La calefacción y la refrigeración pasiva se ve reforzada en los interiores a través de pantallas móviles. Siguiendo el ejemplo de las pantallas shoji de deslizamiento de las casas japonesas, los muros de las habitaciones se pueden deslizar para cambiar la dinámica espacial del interior.

Solsticio de Verano

El espacio se hace fluido, adaptable y versátil; abierto a veces y cerrado en otras. Los balcones de tres metros de ancho en el lado oeste tienen cubiertas con vegetación típica de Australia y son una extensión de las áreas de estar.

En los últimos tiempos se han sucedido, en los centros históricos de las ciudades europeas, experiencias varias de reconstrucción de sus zonas históricas, impelidas por la necesidad de reconvertir y dotar de nuevos usos edificios y espacios deteriorados por el paso del tiempo o por alguna catástrofe accidental.

Casi todas estas intervenciones han provocado, de una u otra manera, la confrontación dialéctica de dos posiciones antagónicas orientadas a la definición del criterio a seguir: ultraconservadurismo o evolución planificada.

Por otro lado, afrontar la construcción de vivienda social en un centro histórico, agrupados y seriados nos sugería el establecimiento de paralelismos entre tareas de función sencilla y finalidades complejas, y que coloca la creación de vivienda contemporánea ante la necesidad imperiosa de estandarizar. De acuerdo con esta experiencia, se ha buscado la perfección, la armonía, la exactitud, la economía de espacios. Todo esto no es solo perfección y armonía: es belleza.

En la arquitectura propuesta, la imagen de la manzana o cuadra viene solo sugerida por la de dos edificios de volumen rotundo deslizándose entre ellos. Estos definen un movimiento horizontal – el único posible, dado las visiones fragmentarias que de ellos se tienen en su aproximación- , de los unos sobre los otros, agujereados por líneas de ventanas con varios sistemas de cierre.

Hoy en día, el sistema económico obliga a la racionalización y normalización en la vivienda de precio ajustado o social. Pero, por otro lado, el aumento de complejidad de nuestros requerimientos sociales (singles, familias monoparentales, gente mayor, inmigración con estructuras familiares numerosas, etc…) exige flexibilidad. En un futuro deberá atenderse a ambos aspectos. Para lograr este propósito, proponemos un sistema de construcción en esqueleto como el más oportuno, dado que hace posible medios de fijación racionalizados y, al mismo tiempo, la división sin trabas en el interior.

En este sentido, hemos considerado las cocinas y cámaras higiénicas, dados los requerimientos de sus instalaciones, como núcleos fijos y que el espacio restante pueda ser (com)partido con mobiliario o tabiques móviles. En función de las necesidades del usuario, del tipo de familia que lo habite, de la llegada de visitantes o del ciclo día/noche, ocio/trabajo, el espacio cambiará, se transformará…

A partir de un único concepto de vivienda se desarrollan las cinco tipologías, en función del número de dormitorios requeridos y de su flexibilidad programática. Este mecanismo se muestra idóneo si, como es el caso, se fija el mismo porcentaje para todas las tipologías, que permite reversibilidad en caso de nuevas necesidades. La versatilidad del modelo raíz permite adjudicar virtualmente la “misma” vivienda a cada unidad familiar y establecer, así, un principio real de igualdad entre sus inquilinos.

El espacio de la vivienda es siempre continuo, atravesado en todo momento por largas líneas visuales que prolongan la vivienda al espacio exterior, más allá de sí mismo, sin menoscabar la necesaria intimidad de sus habitantes gracias a sus tabiques/mobiliario móviles.

Todas las viviendas se abren tanto a la calle como al espacio interior de patio. Este carácter pasante los dota de una idónea ventilación cruzada y de un buen asoleo, potenciado por el escalonamiento descendente de la sección.

La unidad que produce la seriación, la flexibilidad del modelo versátil, la continuidad del espacio, el carácter pasante que facilita la iluminación y la ventilación naturales, la economía de soluciones técnicas y la simplicidad constructiva se rebelan como cualidades deseables en el desarrollo de la vivienda social y como tales los hemos entendido como herramientas que favorecen su desarrollo como un bien deseable.

El espacio disponible para este proyecto de reforma interior es un rectángulo de 20 mt por 8 mt aproximadamente, dividido en tres espacios principales en la fachada y varias dependencias internas que ocupan el espacio central.

Los nuevos requerimientos para el futuro uso como oficina de arquitectura, plantean la necesidad de una gran sala de trabajo para varias mesas, una sala de reuniones, un despacho, sala de espera, oficinas, baño y recepción.

Dadas las proporciones y características del espacio, con aberturas en los dos lados de 8 mts, se prioriza ocupar la fachada con los espacios de trabajo y reunión, concentrando el resto de los espacios de servicio agrupados en la zona central.

Para dar forma a estas condiciones de organización, se plantea generar un cuerpo central formado por una piel blanca plegada que recoge los servicios del despacho dentro de unas cajas naranjas separadas, que mediante su ubicación estratégica generan los espacios de recepción y sala de espera con un simple pliego abierto por dos bandas opuestas.

La posición estratégica del cuerpo central hace que se genere una doble circulación a su alrededor, de manera que se puedan separar los movimientos del personal del despacho de los visitantes exteriores sin generar pasillos ni espacios residuales, permitiendo que se aproveche totalmente la superficie, utilizando además todo el perímetro como espacio de librería y archivo.

Las particiones y cerramientos se han realizado con vidrio para mantener una lectura continua del elemento central visible desde todos los ámbitos como organizador de las diferentes dependencias.

Para organizar el espacio de trabajo principal se ha dispuesto un mueble lineal central equipado del que cuelgan las mesas de trabajo a ambos lados generando subespacios abiertos para cada punto de trabajo, que comparten un ámbito único donde el blanco domina techo y paredes para dotar de mayor luminosidad a la zona, igual como se hace en todas las zonas principales del despacho.

El proyecto consiste en un lounge bar que nace con una premisa base: la singularidad y el trato exclusivo al cliente.

Se conforma a partir de un espacio único que sea capaz de generar una gran cantidad de percepciones: visuales, cromáticas, auditivas y sensitivas.

Como solución, se propone realizar una malla metálica tridimensional formada por más de 300 piezas diferentes y que al deformarla, estirarla y moldearla, se adapta a la arquitectura existente del edificio donde se inserta.

Así, se presenta como una sola envolvente que va generando diferentes espacios, y que a la vez los separa visualmente. Una única solución; un elemento unitario pero con multiplicidad de variables.

La T4 de Barajas. Infraestructuras.

El pasado jueves D. Miguel Rodriguez tuvo la suerte de ser invitado por Iberia ( @iberia en twitter) a visitar algunas de las zonas de la T4 de Barajas que normalmente no están a la vista cuando hacemos un viaje y a conocer algunos de los procedimientos que la compañáa esta implantando para mejorar su servicio, sobre todo tras la fusion con British Airways y la alianza OneWorld.

La primera vista fue el Sistema Automático de Tratamiento de Equipajes (SATE). Se trata de todo el entramado de cintas de transporte que se encargan de tratar el equipaje desde que los dejas en los mostradores de facturación hasta que llegan a la bodega de tu avión. Y por supuesto, tambien el camino de vuelta cuando aterrizas en Barajas, desde el avión a los hipódromos de recogida, o a otro avión si tienes que enlazar dos vuelos en Madrid.

El sistema consta de mas de 130 Km de cintas -45 Km de ellas, de alta velocidad- que discurren por debajo de prácticamente toda la T4 y hasta la T4S, por debajo del tren que usamos los viajeros. La distancia entre ambos edificios es de unos 3 Km. Las maletas son subidas a unas bandejas amarillas -un bulto por bandeja- y lanzadas a una velocidad de hasta 40 Km/h para realizar todo su viaje en un máximo de 15 minutos. El sistema tambien garantiza que si hay que devolver una maleta por cualquier motivo -un pasajero de repente no puede viajar en el último momento-, tambien sea devuelta en ese tiempo. Es posible tratar y clasificar mas de 20.000 equipajes a la hora.

El sistema funciona sin intervención humana -salvo problemas- completamente. Cada bandeja con su correspondiente maleta toma una ruta en cada una de las bifurcaciones que encuentra en su camino para optimizar el recorrido. De hecho, si por algun motivo hay un fallo en alguna de las rutas, se usará un camino alternativo para llegar a destino.

En el SATE trabajan diariamente unas 400 personas entre personal de seguridad y el personal especializado que se ocupa de las posibles incidencias en el sistema. Para ello cuentan con todo tipo de repuestos para cualquier incidencia que pueda producirse.

En resumen, el sistema solo puede calificarse como impresionante técnicamente, me imagino que por poco frikis que fueran los ingenieros que lo diseñaron, debieron disfrutarlo muchísimo. He de agradecer al personal de Aena que nos acompañó todas las explicaciones detalladas de nos dieron sobre el funcionamiento del mismo. ¡Gracias!

Tras esta visita fuimos a visitar la sala donde se sincronizan los vuelos de OneWorld (la alianza que incluye entre otros a Iberia, British Airways y American Airlines) que hacen escala en Madrid. En las pantallas se puede observar cuantos pasajeros de un determinado vuelo tienen correspondencia con otros vuelos, cuales son estos y si alguno de ellos (de llegada o salida) tienen alguna incidencia.

Se ha establecido un sistema para comodidad de los pasajeros para evitar la tipica situación de llegar a un aeropuerto, tener que tomar otro vuelo que sale pocos minutos despues y tener que recorrer a la carrera un aeropuerto que normalmente no conoces.

Para ello se han diseñado dos tarjetas -naranja y azul- que son entregadas a los pasajeros en la misma puerta de desembarque con distintos significados. La naranja viene a decir corre, que el siguiente vuelo te está esperando, llegas a tiempo y con esta tarjeta naranja, en la que te hemos puesto toda la información para llegar a tu puerta de embarque, tienes todas las puertas abiertas sin tener que perder mucho tiempo en los controles de seguridad.

Por el contrario, la azul viene a significar: no te preocupes, que no llegas: has perdido el siguiente vuelo pero ya te hemos reservado una plaza en el próximo hacia tu destino. Aqui está el bono de hotel o de restaurante si es necesario.

El siguiente punto de la visita fue el Hub Control, la sala desde la que se controla prácticamente todo lo que sucede en el aeropuerto -al menos lo que sucede con Iberia-

Cualquier cosa que pueda estar prevista en la operativa de Iberia en el aeropuerto, desde enviar un camión de pushback a remolcar un avión a la coordinación de los gestores de incidencias (los conocidos como chaquetas rojas que, por cierto, ahora cuentan con un iPad como ayuda para su trabajo) o enviar una jardinera a buscar a la tripulación de un vuelo se controla -y está prevista- en esta sala. Por supuesto, cualquier imprevisto es también gestionado desde estas pantallas.

Ciertamente, la apariencia de que todo esta controlado es potente. Luego, en el día a día podrán pasar cientos de cosas, es imposible controlar absolutamente todo cuando pasan por un aeropuerto mas de 24 millones de visitantes al año. Este centro, compuesto por 18 puestos operativos, procesa unas 5000 tareas diariamente que afectan a la programación del trabajo de unas 4000 personas en las cuatro terminales de Barajas.

La visita finalizó en la sala Dalí, una de las salas VIP con las que cuenta el aeropuerto. En esta sala se dispone de conexión a internet en ordenadores propios, de conexion gratuita para tu portatil con cables o conexion WiFi de pago (incomprensible, pero asi es). En este lugar se puede tomar algo mas que un refrigerio y se dispone incluso de duchas y salas de descanso.

Para terminar, Iberia nos invitó a un aperitivo en una de las salas que se pueden reservar para mantener reuniones a puerta cerrada dentro de la sala Dalí. Fue un buen momento porque pudimos hablar entre nosotros y con el personal de Iberia de forma distendida aparte de reponer fuerzas tras mas de 3 horas recorriendo la T4.

En resumen, una gran experiencia que me ha ayudado a entender (y espero a vosotros tambien) un poco mejor como funciona un lugar por que pasa tantísima gente al dia, en el que trabajan 30.000 personas (si, no me he equivocado, ese es el dato que nos dieron) y que requiere de una increible organización para que no se convierte en un enorme caos.

This project is located on the 19th floor of a midtown 1959 modernist building. It includes the full renovation of 15,000sf for offices for a branding research and communication office. 711 Third Avenue, 19th Floor, Midtown, NYC / 15,000sf

The objectives for this young research communication agency moving from Soho, NYC was to create an identity for their new midtown offices. We demolished existing perimeter offices, wood paneling, soffits and finishes and created an open, clean work plan with meeting and breakout areas, a viewing facility, conference room, and flexible event space. The space needed to be conducive to idea sessions and also hosting clients and viewing facility users.

The use of graphic custom-designed light fixtures at the low ceiling level creates a visual landscape in what would otherwise be a field of monotonous acoustic tile. Also custom graphic walls inspire and invigorate the space. The graphic design depicts the networking of the internet and speaks abstractly to the communication and interlinking of ideas, innovation, and global reach of the agency and its clients.

As the project had a tight budget, we experimented with custom designs that could be made locally by fabricators we work with frequently. We developed a colorful coat hook system along a back wall that is practical yet provides a graphic element when empty so is dual-purposed. A custom powder-coated mesh wall in the Event Space allows the staff to use magnets to hang posters, idea sessions and interoffice communication with ease. A favorite local nursery supplied 20 large tropical plants placed throughout the office—to add some nature to the high rise office space.

The Schertz Public Library is a new 30,000 s.f. facility that serves the largest suburban city in the San Antonio metropolitan area. The client desired a building that would reflect the spirit and character of this traditionally rooted but forward looking community.

The site, at a major intersection, shares space with a recreation center and a park area to create a new civic center at the heart of the community.

An elliptical glass-walled courtyard, anchored by a large red oak, divides the large volume into a main reading room and a children’s room.

The focus of the public areas is a north-facing glass wall that illuminates the space with indirect natural light and provides views to the library courtyard and the new park area beyond.

Materials were selected that have traditionally been used on residential buildings in the community – limestone, wood siding, and galvanized metal roofing – and used in a contemporary way that speaks to the mission of the Library.

Marsamxetto Harbour will site a new, sea-front hotel, integrating a contemporary building with a 16th century period house; believed to have been occupied by Valletta’s renowned artist Mattia Preti.

Perched on the edge of Salvatore Bastion, the project consists of two main interventions. Firstly it involves the restoration and conversion of the Mattia Preti House into the hotel’s common areas on the ground floor and four luxury suites on the first floor. Secondly, the two infill volumes – one adjacent to the house and one overlying it – will effectively harmonize Masamxetto’s skyline when viewed from across the harbour, whilst supplying the hotel with a further 35 guest rooms and a penthouse suite.

A pedestrian, stepped walkway will detach the new construction from the old, revealing the corner façade of the old house, while providing public access from Marsamxett Road to Old Theatre Lane. Glass bridges will link the two buildings above the public walkway, while a glazed façade on Old Theatre Lane will introduce the energy of a busy hotel atrium into an otherwise very narrow and dreary alleyway.

With the site lying directly above the Valletta-Sliema ferry dock, a proposed public lift (accessible from the street while lying in the hotel’s footprint) will connect Marsamxett Road to the seafront below. This will facilitate vertical access to guests, visitors and locals arriving from across the harbour. The adjacent and currently derelict water polo pitch will be converted into the hotel’s lido and beach facilities, possibly also reinstating the defunct Valletta water polo club.

The visual integration with the adjacent buildings and fortifications, particularly when viewed from across Marsamxetto Harbour, required an aesthetic that had to be primarily centred on the use of local limestone. Old and New are integrated in their materiality and separated by distinct voids. The new stepped walkway and a recessed floor will create this separation in the form of strong ‘shadow gaps’ in order that both remain clearly identifiable.

We wanted to ensure views from the rooms, and yet were preoccupied with antagonistic, large glazed apertures. This led to the creation of a delicate, sculptural skin; which satisfied both concerns.

Approaching the hotel from either side of Valletta’s peripheral road at first presents a façade built entirely out of stone. The façade’s tactile geometry, borrowed from the nearby bastions, reveals the apertures only when one stands directly in front of the building. From across the harbour, the prevailing areas of stone and the vertically proportioned openings merge happily with the surrounding windows and gallarija cityscape.

This new experience of the city, we are very hopeful, will promote Valletta as a top international destination, while restoring the sophistication and innovative motivations of its original enlightened architects and creators.

The client, Christ Church Grammar School, requested a new facility that would provide the spatial and functional facilities for manual crafts and visual arts education. It was equally important to the School that the prominent corner site was furnished with an attractive building that positively addressed the school campus as well as the busy streetscape.

At the urban scale, the new DTVA is set back, in a gesture of respect, to reveal the beautiful architecture of the neighbouring Anglican Church and the distinctive tree that marks the intersection. DTVA provides students and teachers with the latest equipment, technology and facilities in a variety of spaces arranged to support the most current educational practices. The finished complex is considered a state-of-the-art facility for a secondary school.

Sustainable buildings are important to Christ Church Grammar School. In addition to the passive design principles providing cross ventilation and natural light through perimeter windows and skylights, the high energy demands of this fully equipped facility utilise a geo-thermal bore and subterranean air-handling system to assist in the heating and cooling requirements. This technology, the first of its kind in Western Australia, significantly reduces the costs of energy.

Allied Works Architecture was founded in 1994 by Brad Cloepfil and has grown to 50 employees with offices in New York City and Portland, Oregon. They have designed buildings for the arts, creative workspaces, residences, education buildings, and urban designs. Receiving numerous awards for their designs, including a National AIA Honor Award for the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Allied Works Architecture were among the five finalists for the Musée National des Beaux Arts du Québec, check out their proposal here. In 2009 they were selected to design the National Music Center in Calgary.

We will be featuring a handful of designs by Allied Works Architecture over the next few weeks, and decided to start with their award winning University of Michigan Museum of Art located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The building more than doubles the program and collection spaces of the original museum while restoring the Alumni Memorial Hall. The addition occupies one of the last buildable sites on the historic campus, completing the primary public facade of the university.

The powerful forces of history and movement forge the museum. Where the historic Alumni Hall is introverted, the new architecture is open and immediate. Thousands of students flow along the “diag,” the main circulation path through campus, moving by and through the galleries, classrooms, and cafes. Extending over the surrounding walks and lawn, the building is formed by three cantilevered walls of concrete and limestone. The pinwheeling arms of structure reach out to hold three distinct landscape rooms: to the south a new entry court adjacent to Alumni Hall, to the east a cloistered sculpture court facing Tappan Hall, and to the north an open court to the heart of campus. Shells of steel and glass mediate the space of the courtyards, filtering light into the galleries and circulation corridors. These veils of structure frame views to the landscape while animating the courtyards with activity from within. A three-story “vertical gallery” defines the heart of the building, a periscope of space that draws visitors into the galleries and unifies collection with unexpected prospects.

With two acts of building, one bounded and one transparent, the extension creates an infinite, spinning juxtaposition of spaces—enclosed and exposed, dark and light, introverted and connected to the surrounding city and university.

The design for the new University of Michigan Museum of Art completely renovates the existing 1910 Alumni Memorial Hall and includes a 53,452 sf expansion wing that houses spaces for exhibition, education and interaction. The expansion is organized around three concrete cantilevers that form three gallery wings joined by a central atrium. One wing extends to engage the existing structure, one defines the street wall on the western edge of the original 40-acre campus and one reaches towards the ‘Diag’, the central identity space of the University.

The stone-clad, cantilevered wing walls resonate with the material palette of the original Alumni Memorial Hall and much of the University of Michigan campus. Each wing is bounded by a glass and aluminum structural curtain wall and skylight system that completes the enclosure and is engineered to provide optimum daylight levels in the galleries. Circulation and stairs are arranged along these translucent walls to allow for glimpses in and out of the building through a series of ‘lenses’ that face the exterior courts on each side.

The new building includes expanded galleries, classrooms, open storage areas, conservation labs, curatorial library, a café, and a 235-seat lecture hall. The placement of educational program elements throughout the new wing and existing building supports the Museum’s academic mission and commitment to a diverse community.

As the first purpose-built facility for the visual arts at the University of Michigan, the expansion becomes a new gateway to the historic museum – an open and inviting space that orients students and visitors to the experience of the art within.

Allied Works collaborated with the museum to plan and design the exhibition furniture. The design bridges the modern aesthetic of the expansion with the historical vocabulary of Alumni Memorial Hall. The display furniture references the proportions and detailing of historic works from periods parallel to the museum’s art collection. The designs originated through careful study of early American, European and Asian furniture precedent. These varied craft traditions served as the inspiration for signature details, proportions and finishes that appear throughout all of the display types.

The designs for the furniture were developed to support the interpretive and curatorial vision of the museum. While remaining distinct in their function and design, the furniture works to mediate between the architecture and the artwork, creating a clear, unified gallery experience.

The renovation of a neglected 1960’s food distribution center on the edge of downtown Minneapolis into a gleaming new headquarters for the creative innovators at KNOCK Inc. is both a fresh and welcomed presence on the underrated stretch of Glenwood Avenue just west of International Market Square. The project’s inventiveness lies in the sustainable transformation of a potential “tear down” structure into a high performance building.

KNOCK Inc., home to a branding, advertising and design firm, is based on a collaborative business model that brings together a diversity of design disciplines to serve their clients. Artistic and innovative thinking allowed us to re-envision, renovate, expand, and create a new KNOCK workspace that enhanced their collaborative work model, conveyed their unique brand and connected the building and interiors with Glenwood Avenue and the unique mix of residential and industrial building stock that surrounds the neighborhood. The renovated space and new addition create a 10,000 sqf work space and a distinguished new presence enlivening Glenwood Avenue.

Insulated walls, roofs and glazing replaced single pane glass units, non-insulated exterior walls and a failing roof. Natural daylight penetrates the space with expansive window openings, floor to ceiling glazed office walls and over 25 solar light tubes enhancing the work environment and reducing energy consumption. Healthy and local building materials were chosen such as reclaimed walnut for the main millwork pieces of the building and cedar siding for the additions at the front and back of the facility. Most of the existing structure is exposed, minimizing excessive ceiling materials and increasing the sense of openness.

KNOCK’s creative and collaborative business model sets out to redefine what it means to build a brand. Their office space was designed to support this idea and enhance teamwork and creative interaction by using gathering and collaborative spaces as the organizing elements of the design, rather than placing them in a peripheral, or secondary, relationship to the individual work spaces. A diversity of collaborative spaces was created throughout the office, including pin up walls in all work areas for spontaneous meetings, a focused critique space for small team meetings located in the heart of the office, a library stocked with the latest design-focused books and periodicals for smaller and quieter gatherings, and two large conference rooms for office and client meetings. The collective team culture is reinforced in the kitchen with a table designed for meetings, casual gatherings and lunches of twenty plus employees. A yoga room, exercise room and a game room provide additional non-traditional work areas. The work, the culture, and the workspace combine to convey the very unique creative product offered by KNOCK.

The municipal sports hall is located at the main road to Podcetrtek near Terme Olimia spa resort. It is located directly by the road, behind the existing roadside dyke. The main entrance itself is facing the road and is accessible via a connecting path between two driveways at the extreme points of the dyke.

Due to its size, which greatly exceeds the outlay of traditional constructions, it is impossible to look for similarities with indigenous surrounding architecture, but it seems logical to seek the design resemblances with larger facilities of the thermal complex. Especially the Termalija building, which is also located directly by the regional road. A specific dialogue is established between the two facilities. Termalija on one hand appears empty, light and colorful – almost playful, the municipal sports center on the other hand acts rather serious – as a full, heavy, monolithic structure.

Its incidence is, to some extent, connected with the role and purpose it aspires to have in the city. Podcetrtek is a small town, and the new sports hall represents the single local indoor venue. Although primarily intended for sports activities, the main municipal hall will be also used for cultural events with larger number of visitors. It is this dual role that defines the platform for the specific design of the building. Its primary design element is a “red carpet”, which leads visitors to the events in the building. The pathway that connects both driveways on the two extreme points is carved into the existing dyke. It is benefiting from the spatial anomaly and the dyke, thus shielding the entrance from the direct influence of the road. Spatially designed path, bounded by the dyke on one side, is incised in the building on the other side. Presented in vivid colors and attractive shapes it widens in front of the entrance to form a quality – almost square like area. An access platform that gradually embraces the visitors and directs them towards the main hall entrance.

The festivity of the access is in the evenings highlighted by a light ornament on the facade. Perforated cladding covering large window openings and preventing the disturbing, direct impact of sun on the playgrounds throughout a day shines in distinctive flower patterns at dusk. The indoor developments are thus directly reflected on the facade and add to the promotion of events, as well as the attractiveness of the facility.

This building evolved from significant public conversations with students, parents, teachers and community activists, working with historians, curators, folklorists, artists and architects to envision a community gathering place.

As the first important civic building funded in over thirty years, the fine arts center needed to convey the community’s cultural heritage, hopes and aspirations.

The site was built up and the building placed at the crest, so that it could be seen from all directions at a distance.

It is a building of its time, declaring a kind of border modernism that is influenced by the regional vernacular of simple auto shops and garages of the Rio Grande Valley as well as an international modernism that is associated with Mexico.

It tells a story…of La Maquina Amarilla (The Yellow Machine) a rallying cry that defines the spirit of the people of this area. La Maquina Amarilla is recorded as a *Corrido or Border Folk Song that is a part of the oral history of the city. The sound patterns of La Maquina Amarilla have been interpreted as a mural which wraps the building, creating an icon of cultural voice through which every visitor must enter.

Intervention in a space of this kind means a job of strata, successive throughout his long life.

The typology of this place is no different from the typical that can be found, with minor variations, in the center of Madrid. Such spaces at the street with parallel structure to the walls of the main facade and a basement below ground level that has neither natural light nor ventilation. It holds no other tasks that serve as a warehouse.

By the time we receive the job, we found a long succession of these actions along the building’s history and what we offer is a simplification exercise. We simply provide an attractive space that is capable of serving as a container for the uncertainties of the program. It was never clear how many square meters would occupy the area of afternoon coffee or the amount of books that would go on sale and how many different issues, or presentations and events of various kinds had to be on the top floor or below or evening cocktails weekend and revenue could sum up more surface than other different uses.

It follows the result. To this we add a really tight budget. We get a space that has direct reference to the New York loft and referrals to the art galleries of the early seventies. The idea was to design a site with an important legacy. It should be able to converse with the various activities that take place there and to the different types of visitors. This is a cleaning and lighting job in the very literal sense of the word. We had to expand the industrial side of this place and to file the excess of minimalism, in which it is easy to fall but we were not ready. Therefore, white paint, garage flooring, naked daylight bulbs should be complemented by an intense spatial relationship. Also a series of interrelated spaces should be developed, in order to provide a sensory experience of the visit. Should be a place of action more than for observation.

The place calls the attention of passers from the street by a large and light bare space that gives us the impression that there is sufficient height and surface to hold all you could be offered. We convey the idea of space left over; there will be far from being tightened … Inside, continuous drift between haphazardly arranged tables and neither empty nor totally full shelves. In the back there is a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere painted in a wine colour, while a glass floor reveals a striking orange to invite to continue the journey. We are led to a basement that will serve as exhibition gallery even if it has to live with other programs.

New data issued by Airports Council International identifies a South Korean airport as unchallenged when it comes to treating customers at a world-class level.

For the sixth year in a row, Incheon International Airport – South Korea’s largest – is ACI’s top performer for customer service. This, as per feedback given by the passengers that use it, and by the passengers using all the other airports surveyed by ACI for its annual and hotly-anticipated Best Airport Worldwide report.

“I extend my congratulations to Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea, which for the sixth straight year has taken the top customer service award honour, Best Airport Worldwide”, Angela Gittens, ACI’s Director General, stated in a press release issued mid-February 2011.
She continued: “Asia Pacific airports made a clean sweep of this worldwide category, as they did last year, with Singapore Changi Airport, Hong Kong International Airport, Beijing Capital International Airport, and Shanghai Pudong International Airport garnering respectively the second, third, fourth and fifth places for 2010.
“We applaud the consistent success story of the Asia Pacific airports, which set the bar in service excellence.”

Best Airport in the World
Overall, more than 300,000 passengers around the world took part. Here’s what they said were the world’s best airports, for customer service, overall:
•Seoul Incheon International Airport was judged the best airport in the world
•Cape Town International Airport was judged the best in Africa
•Malta International Airport was Europe’s best
•Indianapolis International Airport was the best in North America
•Mexico’s Cancun International Airport was the best in Latin America and the Caribbean

Participating ASQ (Annual Service Quality) airports were assessed not only in terms of their location, but also in respect of their size and, here, some other winners emerged.

The world’s best airport best in the 2-5m passenger capacity class was Canada’s Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport, while 5-15m passengers was won by Hyderabad International Airport. The 15-25m, 25-40m and 40m categories were topped by Gimpo International Airport, Incheon International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport, respectively.
“I emphasize that all ASQ participants have voluntarily and independently decided to join the benchmarking programme”, Gittens added.

Newport Station / Grimshaw

Grimshaw, in association with Atkins, are redesigning Newport Station as part of a citywide regeneration masterplan by Newport Unlimited. As Newport is the first city reached by passengers between England and Cardiff, the station is a highly visible structure. Network Rail were keen that the new station should provide a striking civic building that would provide a gateway opportunity not only to Newport, but to Wales herself.

Newport is bisected by the railway tracks. As a result, each half of the city has developed its own character. Grimshaw’s design embraces this divide, creating two major new concourses. The North Concourse will be on the civic side of the city and focus on the needs of commuters. The South Concourse, on the commercial side, will be for connecting travellers, daytrippers and tourists. Each terminal’s function is reflected in the distribution of ancillary facilities around the station.

Ticket facilities and platform access are split equally between the two terminals. All the main facilities at both terminals are housed in continuous ETFE and aluminium clad spirals. The spiral form of the station mirrors the journey taken within and helps to ease traffic flow by guiding the passenger from ground level up to the connecting bridge and back down onto the platforms. The use of an ETFE wrap over a steel structure not only creates a very bright and airy space but also, due to the lightness of the material, means the building requires a minimal support structure. This brightness of space is compounded by the inclusion of an oculus at the peak of each building, which doubles as a compression ring to secure the structure.

The old station had a single terminal at the end of elongated platforms and many passengers entering and exiting trains are faced with a long walk to and from the concourse. There was also very little provision for disabled access across the tracks. Therefore, the terminals and their connecting bridge have been positioned relative to the trains stopping positions, easing access and offering stronger connections to the city. Pedestrian routes surrounding the station are also being upgraded.

For the main Newport Station terminals, the aim is to complete by 2010, when Newport will play host to the most prestigious event in golf, the Ryder Cup. The upgraded station will provide for the influx of people the city expects for this event and become an icon of Newport’s ongoing regeneration.

Parque Central de Valencia / Kathryn Gustafson

La arquitecta Kathryn Gustafson ha resultado ganadora del concurso para la construcción del Parque Central de Valencia, que se construirá en el corazón de la ciudad del Turia, con una superficie de 260.000 m2 y un presupuesto de 73 millones de euros, convirtiéndose así en el pulmón verde de Valencia y que cambiará la fisonomía de la ciudad para siempre.

La arquitecta americana, que recibirá tres millones de euros para costear la redacción del proyecto definitivo, ha formado equipo con la Unión de Empresas Temporales (UTE) Borgos Pieper Limited, Nova Ingeniería y Gestión S.L. y Grupotec Servicios de Ingeniería S.L. para sacar adelante este proyecto en el que destaca el protagonismo del agua y el diseño paisajístico.

El proyecto se ejecutará en tres fases mientras se construye la estación definitiva y se libera la provisional: Primero la parte de Ruzafa hasta San Vicente, donde hay más libertad para trabajar, luego la zona central, donde se irá avanzando en la medida que se ejecuten las obras del túnel pasante y la Estación Central; y por último, el espacio donde actualmente se sitúa la estación provisional Joaquín Sorolla.

La plaza Norte recibirá visitantes que provienen del centro de la ciudad, así como de la Estación Central. En el centro se sitúa una fuente en forma de óvalo que se revestirá de cerámica haciendo referencia a la tradición artesanal valenciana. En la base se dibujará un plano de orientación del parque. En algunos lugares, la base será transparente, permitiendo al visitante contemplar el movimiento de los trenes en el nivel inferior. Esta plaza estará cubierta por una tela de araña de la que colgarán miles de pequeñas bombillas led.

La plaza Sur hace hace referencia al tren, por lo que el espacio se cubrirá con una cubierta ligera de cables formada a partir de las catenarias de los trenes. En este sistema de cableado se colgará unas luces que, durante el día, creará un juego de sombras y luces en el pavimento.

La plaza de las Artes contará con iluminación especial donde se encuentra la lámina de agua. Al sur, la zona de exhibición de jardines contará con alumbrado singular en sus terrazas y en las cubiertas ligeras del jardín botánico.
En el caso del enorme anfiteatro que habrá donde ahora se sitúa la estación provisional Joaquín Sorolla será necesario construir taludes para habilitar distintas alturas, al igual que en otras zonas.

Por definir queda aún el uso que se le dará a los diversos inmuebles industriales una vez sean rehabilitados pero que se destinarán seguramente a centros sociales, deportivos, culturales y/o de ocio.
